Climate Types

There are many climate types in Russia, spanning great distances.  There are semiarid areas to the south and the west near Kazakhstan, as well as humid continental areas to the west and the southeast (http://www.mapsofworld.com/russia/maps/russia-climate-map.jpg).  There are also subarctic regions in central and eastern Russia, spanning across its horizontal axis (http://www.mapsofworld.com/russia/maps/russia-climate-map.jpg).  Lastly there is small area of highland climate in the southwest corner of the nation, as well as a band of tundra to the north, near the arctic ocean (http://www.mapsofworld.com/russia/maps/russia-climate-map.jpg).  Despite Russia’s size, the climate zones are fairly uniform across its horizontal axis, but more varied from north to south.

Precip

Seasonality of Precipitation

There is a decent annual range of precipitation for both Russian cities Moscow and Irkutsk.  These ranges are 46 millimeters and 94 millimeters respectively (http://rowdy.msudenver.edu/~wagnerri/climatedata.xlsx).  This range for Moscow is exactly the same as that of Denver’s annual precipitation range (http://rowdy.msudenver.edu/~wagnerri/climatedata.xlsx).  Irkutsk is, however, far more seasonal than Denver in terms of precipitation (http://rowdy.msudenver.edu/~wagnerri/climatedata.xlsx).

Temp

Seasonality of Temperature

There is a fairly pronounced annual range of temperature for both Moscow and Irkutsk.  These ranges are 28 degrees and 39 degrees Celsius respectively (http://rowdy.msudenver.edu/~wagnerri/climatedata.xlsx).  This range for Moscow compares fairly similarly to Denver, Colorado which has a range of 22 degrees Celsius, and is fairly seasonal in terms of temperature (http://rowdy.msudenver.edu/~wagnerri/climatedata.xlsx).  Irkutsk on the other hand is considerably seasonal in terms of temperature, even more so than Denver.
